According to the San Diego Padres team site, the Padres sign former New York Yankees starting pitcher Freddy Garcia to a minor league contract.
The deal invites Freddy Garcia who is now 36 years old to compete for a roster spot during Spring Training which will be coming up in a couple of months. Freddy Garcia has a huge opportunity to come in to San Diego and get a spot in the Padres pitching rotation.
The Padres pitching rotation does not have 2 key things #1 being veteran leadership and #2 being depth and that is when Freddy Garcia comes and steps in having both needs that this Padres does not have.
Freddy Garcia the past couple of seasons has been with the New York Yankees. Garcia during his 2 year tenure with the Yankees holds a 19-14 record, recorded 185 strikeouts and had a combine ERA of 4.29.
During the off season Freddy Garcia was linked to have interest in playing for the Miami Marlins but as time went the interest seemed to died down once the Padres got into the mix for Garcia.
