According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the Pittsburgh Pirates re-sign starting pitcher Jeff Karstens to a 1 year contract.
The deal comes as a surprise to us all. This past November the Pirates non-tendered Karstens and making him a free agent. During the off season both sides have been active, Jeff Karstens this off season has been linked to a couple of teams such as the Colorado Rockies and the Kansas City Royals. As the Pittsburgh Pirates signed Francisco Liriano to fill the void in at the end of the Pirates rotation. But the current deal for Liriano is currently going sour as Francisco injured his throwing arm which has put the current deal a 2 year 12 million dollar deal off to the side. But both sides are still discussing a brand new contract.
The Pirates signing Jeff Karstens seems like a insurance policy just in case the Pittsburgh Pirates are not able to work out a brand new deal with Francisco Liriano.
Karstens current deal is going to pay him 2.5 million during the 2013 Major League Baseball season.
